Montreal Cabaret Artist, Musician, Author, Actor brings anarcho Rhymes,
Beats & Strings to Honk Kong Canada's primo anarcho violinist, cabaret artist, author & actor, Norman Nawrocki, brings his live, sampled/looped violin and topical spoken word show to Hong Kong, Sunday, April 5, 2009 at the ACO (Art & Culture Outreach). Nawrocki, who has released over 45 albums since 1986 with his different bands (like Montreal's legendary Rhythm Activism and Bakunin's Bum ¡V with the drummer from GodSpeed You Black Emperor - on G-7 Welcoming Committee Records), published several books (in English, French & Italian, with AK Press & Black Rose Books) and performed across North America and Europe, will be joined on stage by some of Hong Kong's most celebrated underground musicians and artists........ On stage, Nawrocki loops, samples, strums & teases his amplified violin, mixing in original beats and pre-recorded tracks to create hypnotic, ambient soundscapes for his tall tales, comments on world affairs, and dreams about how things could be different. The result: 'Heavenly looped violins, warm percussion and insightful spoken word' (Urbnet); 'An engaging, inventive musician' (Montreal Mirror). Sometimes funny, always thought provoking, Nawrocki is described by Canada's national paper, The Globe & Mail, as 'A born showman who never lets his audiences pass a dull evening.' Critics compare his music to 'anarcho house,' new skool stringed punk, Middle Eastern swing, trance, experimental jazz, and ¡¥East European divorce music.¡¦ Nawrocki is also renowned across Canada and the USA for his hilarious 'sex positive,' anti-sexist and anti-homophobic hit solo sex comedy cabarets (I Don't Understand Women!, My Dick & Other Manly Tales, Sex Toys!). One of his recent solo albums, the beat-rich, anti-Empire, anti-war, 'Duck Work,' was cited by The Montreal Gazette as one of the top 10 local releases alongside an Arcade Fire CD. Nawrocki teaches part-time at Montreal's Concordia University in the School of Community and Public Affairs about how to use the arts for community organizing and social change. He's currently writing his newest book, 'Cazzarola!', a novel about the history of resistance to Fascism in Italy, yesterday and today, and the persecution of Roma refugees.¡¹ |
